In a warm chamber,
awash with the soft amber light of candles,
we invite you to experience Sacred Vespers,
presented Malibu Friends of Music style.
The celebrated musicians of the Malibu Friends of Music present a
truly unique form of the Office of Vespers. Set in a sacred concert
format, Sacred Vespers utilizes all of the facets of the liturgy of
Evensong, including traditional sung prayer and blessings. No words
are spoken, rather they are sung or chanted.
The Malibu Friends of Music sets its distinctive Sacred Vespers
around a large central masterwork from the classical repertoire
which acts as a meditation or homily. Whether purely instrumental
or vocal, the central work illustrates the sung lesson presented
in the opening portion of each Sacred Vespers concert.
Modeled after the age-old Evensong (Evening Prayer) and the
entirely sung Compline Service (Night Prayer),
the Malibu Friends of Music
Sacred Vespers
is designed to be entirely meditative.
This setting allows the listener to be immersed in the
music and mysticism
without direct participatory distractions.
Striving to create a sense of tradition within each Sacred Vespers
presentation, the music liturgy has been fashioned to act and
react as a familiar component of each chapter in the series.
The listener comes to know what to expect and becomes
emotionally involved in this familiarity over time.
Wonderful variation in the Sacred Vespers concerts
appears in the form of revolving chanted readings and common
prayer. The performance of the central work enables the listener
to focus on a great masterwork from a contemplative perspective.
In this way, the Malibu Friends of Music can present to the
community as a whole, inviting all to attend this unique form of
Sacred Vespers. In the concert setting described above,
each member of the audience is able to experience the
music and mysticism of Sacred Vespers
in his or her own fashion.
Sacred Vespers will resume Fall 2022.
